Getting in and out of a chair in an integrated way may not be quite what you’re used to. Here are the key points to doing it in an integrated way:

  • The last thing you want to do is to lead with your behind towards your chair. This part of you was never meant to lead your body in any way LOL
  • On the other hand, you do want to keep your weight balanced above your feet throughout the whole movement as if you were simply squatting to pick something up from the ground.
  • It is important to keep your vision field changing as your body leans forward so as to not compress the back of your neck.
  • Any compression in your midback or neck interferes with the ease of an integrated movement.
  • As you lean forward to stand up or sit down, looking progressively towards your toes, then your heels will help the back of your neck not get compressed.
  • Do not sacrifice the front length of your neck. If your head needs to tilt forward, it is from the top of your spine at the occipital joint

Now, you will have a week to play with these instructions as you make them yours in your daily activities.

Don’t let the novelty be in your way. The truth is that the integrated way is the natural way. It is already available to you. You just need to become aware of the habits that have been interfering and unlearn those, at your own pace.
